But that’s today. Here’s how it all began…
The Student & Surgeon: The Beginning of the Own Your Health Philosophy
After graduating from Stanford University with Distinction, Dr. E received his Doctor of Medicine from the renowned University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. It was here as a young medical student that Dr. E first felt "the call" not only to care for those suffering from illness, but to advocate for these individuals and their families - to recognize not only their medical and surgical needs, but to also appreciate the emotional, psychological, social, financial, and other needs that impact those who have or love someone with a serious condition. While training as a surgical intern, resident, and finally Chief Resident at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. E also spent an additional two years working in the university's Surgical Oncology (cancer) research lab. After seven years, Dr. E left beautiful California to experience the joy that is winter in Minnesota. In truth, Dr. E was honored to accept a coveted Surgical Fellowship at the acclaimed University of Minnesota Colon & Rectal Surgery program. After an intense year focusing on surgical diseases of the abdomen and pelvis, Dr. E was finally done with training and off to care for patients!
All grown up (surgically speaking, as by this time he was well into his thirties), Dr. E spent the next years practicing in large San Diego community hospitals, providing surgical care to patients with a large variety of conditions. Here, Dr. E’s interest in patient advocacy expanded and matured, and he began to define his Own Your Health philosophy of healthcare. Soon, his passion for educating others led Dr. E back to medical school, and he joined the Surgical Faculty at the prestigious Stanford University School of Medicine, where he served as the medical center’s sole Colon & Rectal Surgeon as well as Associate Surgical Residency Program Director.
But a career in the operating room was only another stop along Dr. E's journey...
The Physician Executive: The Philosophy Matures
After several years caring for patients and educating young doctors at Stanford, Dr. E’s entrepreneurial nature drew him into the world of Silicon Valley, where he was twice a founding officer (including President & CEO) of venture capital-financed medical companies. After a decade of leading these companies, Dr. E then entered the dawning world of today’s healthcare reform, serving as a physician executive in a multi-facility, multi-state hospital system. Here at the front lines, Dr. E clearly saw an over-taxed care delivery system in which the needs of patients and families were further de-prioritized. Dr. E wished to better understand private industry’s attempts to improve patient care amidst the tumultuous reform movement, selecting the respected global health company, Elsevier, where as Chief Medical Officer for Elsevier Clinical Solutions, Dr. E focuses on empowering patients and providers in improving the quality of their healthcare.
